What is a Statement of Purpose?

All applicants submit a Statement of Purpose (SOP) as part of their Degrees+ application.

It is a short written statement that provides more context about your academic accomplishments to date.

Don’t worry, this is not an essay or writing test!

Why do I need a Statement of Purpose?

You’re more than what official documents say about you. So this is an opportunity for you to share your story.

Your SOP can highlight your strengths as an applicant that a transcript can’t show. And you can address anything in your application that you think could use more explanation.

What should I write about?

Your SOP should briefly describe how you are academically prepared for an associate degree program. In 200-500 words:

  • Describe how the Degrees+ program fits your plans for the future
  • Explain any weaknesses that may appear on your transcript
  • Highlight any strengths that may not be evident elsewhere in your application

Don’t overthink this exercise. Remember, it’s not a writing test! Simply respond to the 3 points above. Focus on writing clearly and concisely. We’re looking for you to give us a glimpse of who you are, where you’re coming from, and where you’re headed.

Reminder: It's always a good idea to proofread your writing and check for typos and general readability before submitting your work.
