Learn where to access your assignments, course chapters, sections, quizzes, and exams!
When you log into your course, after the first day of the term, all the course materials scheduled before the first midterm exam will be unlocked and available to you.
After the first midterm is complete, the chapters that will be covered within the second midterm are unlocked.
Finally, after the second midterm is complete, all remaining course chapters become unlocked and available to you.
After entering your course, you will typically see the course homepage. Which will look similar to this:
Your schedule and coursework will be displayed at the top of the page, to help assist you with keeping on track with course materials.
Outlier courses are divided into a series of chapters and sections. Within each of these elements of any given course, there will be content and quizzes that help you learn the material and prepare you to demonstrate your knowledge on graded assessments.
Depending on the course you are enrolled in, you will have access to a practice exam.
This will give you the opportunity to set up your Proctorio and help prepare yourself for your first midterm exam. Click here to learn more about midterm and final exams.
On the course homepage, you can efficiently access all the chapters you will need to complete.
To view sections of a chapter, press the drop-down arrow to the right of the chapter number and name.
You will also notice teal-colored, oval-shaped progress bars next to each section as you work through them!
If your course has assignments throughout the semester, you will see them dispersed between your course chapters and midterm and final exams.
All assignments will clearly have the due date shown. Before the assignment opens, you can “Preview” what is expected of you. After the assignment opens, you can press “Start” to begin.
In certain sections, you may be presented with guesswork or quizzes.
Guesswork is going to ask you questions about the material you're about to learn. We know you don't know the answers to these, so it's not important if you get these questions right or wrong.
This feature helps to improve your learning outcomes. Guesswork is not graded - so if you need to, feel free to take a wild guess. But, you'll get the best outcomes if you make an educated guess.
After taking the short quiz, you can dive right into your video lectures from the experts! Simply click the arrow to the right of “Lectures” and click the teal “Start” button on the first one!
Along with a one-of-a-kind video lecture from a world expert, you are also given great resources to help you retain the information (depending on the course).
Under the instructor's biography, depending on the course, you will find:
- Guided Notes: a document made just for you! Download or print it out before starting the section and fill it out as you watch the lectures. This will help you remember key terms and concepts as you watch.
- Guided Notes - Key: after completing the entire Guided Notes document, you can easily check your answers by opening this document.
- Summary: this document is a comprehensive overview of the material you will have learned from this section. It is a great document to refer to when preparing for exams!
- Change Instructor (Calculus I only): do you have a particular learning style? When learning Calculus, you have the option to change your instructor based on how you learn best.
Now, you are ready to watch the lecture!
After finishing all lecture videos, Active Learning is the next step.
Active Learning is found right under Lectures on the section page.
Think of Active Learning as an interactive textbook! Every several cards, it will ask you a question or ask you to interact with the material in some way. These questions are designed less to quiz you on what you were just presented but will more usually ask you to reiterate what you’ve just learned. This helps you to retain the information and to learn it better. Keep trying until you get the right answer in order to move forward.
The exercises will not be graded; they are there to prepare you for the section quizzes.
You can use the “Next” and “Previous” navigation buttons to go back and forth between cards. You can also navigate via the numbered circles at the top - scroll these by pressing the left and right arrows on the sides.
Clicking “View List” below the numbered circles will give you a list of all the cards you must do for this section, as well as the progress for them.
Depending on the course you are taking, you will see Practice Exercises under Active Learning on the section page.
The Practice Exercises are here to help you hone your skills. This gives you a place to practice the problems you’ve been learning about throughout the course. These sections will be your opportunity to grapple with the material in a non-graded environment.
At the end of the last section in each chapter, you’ll encounter a set of quizzes.
When you feel that you’ve mastered the material, take a quiz to test your knowledge.
Only your highest quiz score for each section will be counted toward your grade. So if you don’t get a score you like the first time, you can try again.
Throughout the semester, you will find your midterm and final exams. They are all easily accessible from the course homepage.
